Peak TV Explodes As, For The First Time, Streamers Air More Scripted Originals Than Networks And Cable

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Netflix

In 2016, FX CEO John Landgraf expressed his concern that streaming services would eventually drown us all in original content, thanks to the ever-expanding reach of so-called “Peak TV.” He was especially critical of Netflix’s model for original content, insisting that “they can’t double and double and double, because then the entire planet’s surface would be covered by Netflix television shows in 20 years.” That’s not necessarily how digital content works, but in 2018, Landgraf’s worries came true.

According to a new report out from FX, a whopping 495 scripted original series aired this past year. (This is up from 2017’s 487, but less than Landgraf’s prediction that 2018 would see at least 520 shows.) Of this, 32 percent, or 160 shows, were distributed by streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Their closest competitor, broadcast television, put out 146 shows, or 30 percent of the pie. Basic cable followed with 144 shows (29 percent), while paid cable managed to eke out 45 scripted original series (9 percent).

This is a lot of television. Some may say it’s too much. Others, like Uproxx‘s Brian Grubb, would rather point out just how absurd these numbers are by making up fake television show titles and loglines that are impossible to differentiate from the real ones. Yet what’s significant about the 2018 edition of FX’s annual report is the fact that, for the first time since streaming platforms first began distributing original programming, they’re leading the pack in terms of quantity.

After all, Facebook Watch managed to make an original series starring Catherine Zeta Jones titled Queen America, in which the film actress played a troubled pageant coach. And to answer to the two immediate questions that just occurred to you, yes, Facebook is making its own scripted shows, and yes, one of them stars Catherine Zeta Jones.

Neil Young pays tribute to ‘the greatest manager of all time’ Elliot Roberts

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Neil Young has written a letter paying tribute to his manager (Lookout Management founder) Elliot Roberts, who died Friday June 21, aged 76.

He was “the greatest manager of all time”, said Young of his friend Roberts, who was his manager for over 50 years.

“Never one to think about himself, he put everyone else first,” added Young. “That’s what he did for me for over fifty years of friendship, love and laughter, managing my life, protecting our art in the business of music. That’s what he did.”

Roberts (born Elliot Rabinowitz) met Young through Joni Mitchell after relocating to Los Angeles with the folk singer after getting her a deal at Reprise Records, according to the LA Times. Roberts went on to manage Mitchell until 1985.

He also managed several other stars at various points over the years including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and the Eagles.

Roberts formed the Geffen-Roberts Company with David Geffen (who he had met at William Morris Agency), with the pair starting Asylum Records together in 1971, which later merged with Elektra.

“When it came to our business, Elliot guided me through every move. We talked every day. Often I would call him multiple times in a day, arguing, discussing, planning and sharing. He was there for me and protected my music with a fierceness.”

Neil Young

Added Young: “When it came to our business, Elliot guided me through every move. We talked every day. Often I would call him multiple times in a day, arguing, discussing, planning and sharing. He was there for me and protected my music with a fierceness.

“He loved music and managed over the years many greats, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, David Blue, Tracey Chapman, Tegan and Sara, Crosby Stills and Nash, Tom Petty , among others.

“Eliot loved making deals for all of us, saving our publishing rights, ensuring we were treated well, helping book our concerts, as well as booking the Bridge Concert with Marsha Vlassic from the very beginning for over 30 years.

“He made it happen. This world is forever changed for me, for all who knew him and loved him. His memory shines with love.”Music Business Worldwide

Troye Sivan Performs Live Debut of 'Boy Erased' Anthem 'Revelation' at Radio City: Watch

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Troye Sivan's Tuesday show at Radio City Music Hall was a night of firsts. The concert marked the pop singer's first time playing a sold-out show at the iconic New York venue and his first time performing "1999" live with duet partner Charli XCX, whose surprise onstage cameo caused the audience to erupt in deafening screams.

But, perhaps most exciting of all, Sivan's show in the Big Apple became the first stop on his Bloom Tour where he treated fans to a performance of his yet to be released single, "Revelation," which he wrote for Focus Features' upcoming film Boy Erased.

After performing some of his most beloved tracks — including "Bloom," "Heaven" and "Wild," among others — Sivan squeezed "Revelation" into his nearly 20-song setlist. Before the live debut, the 23-year-old, who also stars in Boy Erased alongside Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, explained why he wanted to contribute to the soundtrack for the film.

"I auditioned, and I got the part, which is so crazy. I was very excited about that," he told the crowd, adding that the film — which is based off Garrard Conley's 2016 memoir of the same name and highlights the emotional pain LGBTQ youth experience at gay conversion therapy centers — "is a really important story."

After winning the role of campgoer Gary, Sivan became laser-focused on crafting new material for Boy Erased. "But then I was like, 'Now I need to write the music for the movie,'" he continued. "That’s my thing."

It wasn't long before director Joel Edgerton — who also stars in the film as hyper-Christian, homophobic camp counselor Victor Sykes — gave Sivan a shot. Sivan went on to say that "Revelation" was inspired by a specific scene in Boy Erased that sees Hedges' lead character, Jared, having a "pure and beautiful" interaction with another boy for the first time.

"He has that experience and the fucking sky doesn't fall down on him and the world doesn't come crushing down. And it's a revelation to him," said Sivan. "That person that he was with was a revolution to him. And it was just so inspiring, so we started with these lyrics: 'You're a revelation. You're a revolution.'"

"Revelation" — an emotional ballad with haunting, orchestral instrumentals — was penned with the help of Jonsi of Sigur Ros and Sivan's frequent collaborator Leland, one of the opening acts on the Bloom Tour. "We wrote this song for the movie. It's not out yet. I don't know if I'm allowed to sing it," Sivan said with a laugh. "But I hope it's OK."

Sivan's inaugural performance of "Revelation" — which was met with wild applause from the more than 6,000 fans who attended his show on Tuesday night — came one month after the openly gay artist stopped by The Late Show to tell host Stephen Colbert about the potential impact of Boy Erased. According to the South African-born star, he hopes the message of the film is able to penetrate the minds of parents who have trouble accepting their LGBTQ children.

"[Conversion therapy is] just one of the most damaging things I could imagine," Sivan told Colbert in September. "I really want to communicate with parents as to just how much your reaction to your kid coming out can really shape their lives."

Currently, only 14 states — along with Washington, D.C. — ban conversion therapy for minors on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. In late July, Delaware became the last to restrict the practice, which has been denounced as harmful and ineffective by the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association.

Boy Erased — which also features Sivan's "The Good Side," from his second studio album, Bloom — hits theaters on Nov. 2. Watch fan-filmed video of "Revelation" below.

The midterms aren't the only election results worth watching this November.

In addition to the traditional categories, the 2018 PCAs will also include a bevy of new recognitions, including the awards for the year's athletic "Game Changer," aka who made the year's biggest social impact, along with "the most bingeworthy" show of the year and a nod to the best "animal star."

Unlike the awards season favorites to follow, the PCAs give voice to the public, so if you want to tune in to see your peers' picks for the best films and small screen series of the year, here's what you need to know about watching the People's Choice Awards this fall.

Does Colton Underwood Lose His Virginity on The Bachelor?

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Bachelor people always say that the current season of The Bachelor is different and unique, but it kinda sounds like Colton Underwood might mean it. In a call with reporters Thursday, Underwood struck a different tone than other recent leads, refusing to say if he found love on the show and instead talking about how much he grew as a person. Also, other previous leads never got asked if they lost their virginity during production, so that's already different.

Regarding the virginity question, Colton had this to say: "I always said from the beginning I'm waiting for the right heart and I'm waiting for someone that I feel like I can spend the rest of my life with to share that moment with. And I think that that's what The Bachelor's all about, is trying to find that. And I would obviously, by answering that question, be spoiling the rest of the season, and I wouldn't want to do that for you.

"I will say this season wasn't the easiest for me," he added. "There were ups and downs and at times it got really challenging. It got really hard and it really pushed me. But it allowed me to grow, and I think this is going to be an unbelievable season and I can't wait for everybody to go on this journey with me."

As for if he's in love, all he'd say was, "I'm exactly where I need to be in my life right now." (For the record, every Bachelor or Bachelorette lead since Nick Viall has said if they found love or got engaged.)

He was willing to disclose that he's happy with his life right now, and it's because he has an understanding of who he is as a person. "I would say now more than ever I'm the happiest because I have a sense of who I am and what I want to become," he said. "I might not have it all figured out. I might not have all the answers. But I at least have a sense of what I want out of life."

He also made this very intriguing comment when asked how he's doing things differently than previous Bachelors, which you can take however you will: "I think the way that my experience works is unique. It's different. It hasn't been done before. It hasn't happened yet on The Bachelor. It's just one of those things. It's sort of happened how it happened."

The "hmm" emoji was made for statements like that, right?

The Bachelor Season 23 premieres Monday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c on ABC.

The 'Significant' Death on Modern Family Was Not Worth the Hype

Modern Family Cast Puts Kids In the Spotlight

The cast of Modern Family has been teasing a "significant" death all season and the time has family come to reveal who the unlucky family member is. Now, before you freak out: Jay (Ed O'Neil) and Gloria's (Sofia Vagara) dog Stella is still alive and kicking. But the Halloween episode of the sitcom did kick off with the sad news that Dede (Shelley Long), Ed's ex-wife and Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitch's (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) mom, was the "significant" character who passed away.

Apparently, Dede died peacefully in her sleep while on a trip with her woman's group. Although no one expected a core character to die, Dede's death didn't really live up to the devastating hype that's surrounded this development all season. As executive producer Steve Levitan explained to The Hollywood Reporter, though, the writers wanted to kill someone who would affect the entire family because death isn't something the show has deeply explored before with the entire family.

Discover your new favorite show: Watch This Now!

"[Dede] is directly involved with three of our characters and she touched everybody's life in some interesting way," he said. "It seemed like the right character to put everybody through something. She seemed like the right character because she so directly affects so many of our characters."

Long was warned ahead of Season 10 what would happen to Dede and "was very sweet about it," according to Levitan. The Emmy-winning sitcom has not yet been renewed for a Season 11, and with its parent studio Fox being sold to ABC, the show's future is very unclear. The death of Dede was a way for Levitan and the show to start wrapping up if Season 10 is indeed the end of the show.

What did you think of Dede's death?

Bezos Says Enquirer Threatened to Publish Revealing Pics

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said Thursday he was the target of “extortion and blackmail” by the publisher of the National Enquirer, which he said threatened to publish revealing personal photos of him unless he stopped investigating how other private photos and messages were obtained by the tabloid.

Bezos, who is also owner of The Washington Post, detailed his interactions with American Media Inc. in an extraordinary blog post Thursday on the Medium.com website.

After the tabloid published a story about his extramarital affair last month, Bezos ordered a team of private investigators to get to the bottom of how the Enquirer obtained lurid texts between the executive and former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez. Since then, there’s been a public relations battle.

Earlier this week, the tabloid’s editor, Dylan Howard, emailed an attorney for Bezos’ longtime security consultant in order to describe photos the Enquirer “obtained during our newsgathering.” The photos include a “below the belt selfie” of Bezos, photos of him in tight boxer-briefs and wearing only a towel, and several revealing photos of Sanchez, according to the email Bezos released in his blog post.

According to emails Bezos posted, an attorney for American Media Inc., the Enquirer’s parent company, offered a deal Wednesday: The tabloid wouldn’t post the photos if Bezos and his investigators would release a public statement “affirming that they have no knowledge or basis” to suggest that the Enquirer’s coverage was “politically motivated or influenced by political forces.”

Last month, the Enquirer reported that Bezos sent “sleazy text messages and gushing love notes” to Sanchez, months before Bezos announced he was splitting up with his wife, MacKenzie. Reporters for the Enquirer followed Bezos and Sanchez “across five states and 40,000 miles” and “tailed them in private jets, swanky limos, helicopter rides, romantic hikes, five-star hotel hideaways, intimate dinner dates and ‘quality time’ in hidden love nests,” the tabloid said in its story. The Jan. 9 story carries the bylines of Howard and two reporters.

In his blog post Thursday, Bezos said he decided to publish the emails sent to his team “rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail,” despite the “personal cost and embarrassment they threaten.”

An attorney for American Media Inc. did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment Thursday.

SUPERNATURAL Sneak Peek: Jack Masquerades as an FBI Agent

Jack learns the ropes as a hunter in this week’s SUPERNATURAL. In a sneak peek from the episode, we see that Jack heads out on a case with Dean after convincing the eldest Winchester that he has a lead and that they should pair up. In the clip we can see that Dean hits up a diner with Jack posing as his fellow FBI agent and he’s reacting much like Cas did when he went on his first case — an obvious newbie. Elsewhere in the episode, Charlie returns and teams up with Sam to get to the bottom of a string of random disappearances.

Don’t miss an all new episode of SUPERNATURAL on November 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
